Emerging Adulthood and Culture

In this assignment, you will explore Jeffrey Arnett’s research on emerging adulthood, apply his research to your own development, and identify how your experience differs from cultures other than your own.

Locate and watch 3 videos in the University Library on emerging adulthood in different cultures. You may also use journal articles and other sources from the University Library to supplement your research.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper discussing the following: What is the meaning of emerging adulthood? What are the expectations for an emerging adult in your culture? Compare and contrast the expectations and roles of an emerging adult in the different cultures. What are the implications of the transition on middle adulthood?

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Click the Assignment Files tab to submit your assignment.

From your Instructor:

Attached is a presentation that will hopefully help clarify how to find the resources you need for this assignment.  Make sure that you are looking in the Media Library, and not just the standard UoP library.

The number of appropriate videos in the University Library is limited; therefore, you only need to have a minimum of one UoP video.  The other two resources can be our textbook and/or peer-reviewed scholarly journals (no websites, blogs, other books, YouTube, etc.).

3 Different projects

“End of Life Document”

Draft in your own words your end of life documents: Living will, letter to your health care proxy about whether you wish to be resuscitated or not, and last will and testament briefly (be sure you know the difference in the two types of will).  Use all key terms from text and consider discussing all these issues with your loved one.

“Theory of Aging”

Consider yourself, your parents and grandparents; which theory of aging from chapter 25 best describes what your elders are experiencing and what you expect of yourself and the others as you age?  What behaviors justify putting yourself and/or them in those categories of aging lifestyles?

“Teaching Module”

Create a teaching module, a PowerPoint or a video that teaches 20 course concepts on the theme of your choice.  Post a PowerPoint here.  Post the video on YouTube (send me email with URL so I can grade it).  Begin PowerPoint with an introductory slide that includes your name, a title that represents the theme and objective of your presentation, and information about the course (5 points). The next slide should be a message to your audience, so have your audience in mind as you create your presentation (5 points): are they Eagle Scouts, PTA mothers, parole or police officers, volunteers who plan to speak to. Psychologists are aware of how much people in the world need information, and you can bring it to some of them.  Have 20 slides that cover information about 20 Learning Objectives from the course (80 points).  You have freedom here to choose the topics you find most relevant to life in the outside world.  End with a slide or two with conclusions and implications of the information for your readers in the outside world.  If you are doing a video, include all the information that is required for the PowerPoint Presentation.  Remember to relate your slides to the objectives posted in each module of the course over the chapters covered in that unit.  You can pick the chapters and objectives that fit your theme.  Your last two slides should include a summary (5 points) and a final note to your audience about your hopes for how they can use this information (5 points.

measures of crime

Assignment 3: Measures of Crime

Measuring crime can be a difficult process. By its very nature, crime is something that goes undetected. Law enforcement has developed a variety of techniques to track crime, such as police reports and victim reports. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) uses the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program for tracking crime; it reports crime in more than one way. All crime reporting and tracking systems categorize crime and have certain limitations.

Measuring crime involves tracking statistics such as demographic information and moderator variables related to the crimes. Moderator variables are any third variable in a correlation that affects the relationship between the first two variables. For example, we may find that gender is related to violent crime with a higher percentage of males engaging in violent behavior. However, a moderator variable would be age, with the highest percentage of violent offenders being below the age of 30.

Research US crime statistics using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. You can also use the following: US Department of Justice, The Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2009). 2008 crime in the United States: About crime in the U.S. Retrieved from http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2008

Select a crime and write a report addressing the following: Summarize the statistics from the last two reporting years. Be sure to include demographic information such as ethnicity, race, age, gender, marital status, employment status, socioeconomic group, etc., and moderator variables related to the crime. Examine the reliability and validity of these statistics. Are they accurate? Why or why not? Be sure to discuss how age, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level are related to offending and representation in the criminal justice system. Explain whether certain populations are overrepresented in the statistics. If so, why?

Use the textbook and peer-reviewed sources to support your arguments.

Write a 2–3-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

news reflection paper

News Reflection Paper

In this assignment you will explore printed media and discover new scientific data and see how that data is being used and interpreted. It will be easier to analyze and give your views on the article and related issues, if you become a critical reader. Decide if the information presented in the article is biased. Is the author trying to persuade you to agree with his point of view? Look at the people involved in the article, the writer, the researcher, the people funding the research -are they influencing how the research data is being presented? What are the values and beliefs of these people? Look at how new scientific data is collected and how it is used and developed within our society.

The Process:

1. Locate and read a recent article from a newspaper, magazine or the Internet. The article should have been written since 2016 and should relate to a science topic covered in psychology. Some places you might want to look for articles include:

· The Washington Post
· Science News Magazine
· The New York Times
· Time Magazine
· Discover
· The Washington Times
· Scientific American

Theses sources may be found in the library or on the Internet. You do not need a copy of the article to turn in with your review; however you will need to properly reference the article, as you would in a bibliography.

2. Summarize the information contained in the article. The summary should be 2-3 paragraphs in length and should include the basic facts given in the article. The summary should be about one half of the total length of the paper.

3. Give your views about the article. Your views will be unique, they will not be right or wrong. Your reaction to the article should be supported with thoughtful reasoning and explanations. Here are some points you might want to consider, they might not relate to all of the article you choose.

· Is the article related to topics covered in class?
· Is the article biased in any way? Is the author trying to convince the reader to agree with him/her?
· Do your personal beliefs influence they way this information should be used?
· Will this information affect you personally or someone in your family?
· Who is going to benefit from research in your article? Will all people have equal access to this information? Will this new discovery benefit many people or just a few?
· Who is going to benefit economically from this research?
· If a new technology is developed, will new laws need to be made to protect citizens?

4. The total length of the paper should be one or two pages typed, doubled spaced.

5. Credit the Author! Use a reference citation for the article just like one in a bibliography. The web address alone is not a proper citation!

· Example:

Author (date of publication) Title of the Article, Source. Volume, page number.

Jones, K., & Day, J. D. (1997) Discrimination of Two Aspects of Cognitive-Social Intelligence from Academic Intelligence, Journal of Educational Psychology. 89, 486-497

· If you find an article online this is how you would cite the author:

Benton Foundation (1998). Losing ground bit by bit: Low-income communities in the information age [Electronic version]. Retrieved June 27, 2001, from http://www.benton.org/Library/Low-Income/two.htm

Development Throughout the Lifespan

 Development Throughout the Lifespan

Erikson and Freud are two of the few theorists who have developed a lifespan approach to development. Freud’s approach to development was psychosexual while Erikson’s was psychosocial. Even though Freud’s theory is better known, Erikson’s theory remains a leading and very much applied model in personality and developmental psychology today.

When considering these two stage-oriented theories, you can directly compare the majority of their stages. These are matched in the following table:Approximate Age Freud’s Stages of Psychosexual Development Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial developmentInfancy (Birth to 1 year) Oral stage Trust versus mistrustEarly childhood (1–3 years) Anal stage Autonomy versus doubtPreschool (3–6 years) Phallic stage Initiative versus guiltSchool age (7–11 years) Latent period Industry versus inferiorityAdolescence (12–18 years) Genital stage Identity versus role confusionYoung adulthood (19–40 years)   Intimacy versus isolationMiddle adulthood (40–65 years)   Generativity versus stagnationOlder adulthood (65–death)   Integrity versus despair

When considering Erikson’s eight stages of development, the way a person moves through each stage directly affects their success in the next stage. Their personality is being built and shaped with each stage. At each stage, there is a turning point, called a crisis by Erikson, which a person must confront.

In this assignment, you will observe or interview two different people, each at a different stage of development. For a third observation, take a look at yourself and the stage that you are in (this stage must be different from your other two observations).Record your three observations in a template. Include the following information:NameAgeGenderCurrent developmental stageStatus within the stage (i.e., identity achievement or role confusion)Events that have lead to this status

Download a Development Template from the Doc Sharing area to record your observations.Summarize what you have learned about psychosocial development through these observations/interviews.Summarize the trends you see in your observations/interviews regarding psychosocial development. How does movement through Erikson’s stages influence personality development? Again, be specific. How do Erikson’s stages of development compare to Freud’s stages? How are they similar? How are they different?Between these two theories, which one do you feel best explains your own personality development? Justify your answers with specific examples.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Insert your chart at the end of your paper. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

week 11 question 1

For the most part, the theories you explored in this course focused on Western cultures. Western cultures often are the baseline when conducting cross-cultural comparisons. Miao and Wang’s (2003) article examining Chinese developmental psychology provides insight into how another culture examines human development. While major developmental theorists and researchers (e.g., Gesell) influenced Chinese researchers, the topics of interest for Chinese researchers did not necessarily reflect those of Western researchers.

This course has introduced multiple perspectives and presented culturally diverse research examining all phases of human development. For this Discussion, consider what led research to be conducted to examine diverse settings and groups. Was it an attempt to broaden the population within which the findings could be applied, a reaction to a gap in the literature, or perhaps a critique of a conclusion or theory?

If you have not had an opportunity to delve into a statistics or methodology course, some of the techniques in this week’s research articles might be confusing, but the process that the researchers used should be understandable.

To prepare for this Discussion: Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider the applicability of American/Western developmental psychology to Non-Western countries and cultures. By Day 3

Post your thoughts about the applicability of American/Western developmental psychology to Non-Western countries and cultures. Explain why it is important for developmental psychology to consider cross-cultural perspectives explaining human development. Justify your post with specific examples and citations from the Learning Resources.
