this is my experience: I had a patient who was not able to speak English. we had interpreter who explained every thing about DNR. patient requested DNR, but the family members were not there at that time. as a policy we put the DNR sign in her room and in her chart. every body who were in charge of her care, were aware of the DNR. But when the family came to her room and aw the sign they ask about the sign and didn’t knw what it is. when we explained it they were very mad and upset. they thought it was doctors order. they wanted to talk to doctor. then doctor explained them about DNR. . we had interpreter as well to make sure they understand the whole thing. for the second time doctor asked patient about her wish and request regarding DNR. she confirmed and requested to have DNR. the family was upset regarding her request. but since she was alert and aware and understands everything about having DNR, doctor keep the order and follows DNR policy and act. It was patients request.
