Significant Contributions of the Army Warrant Officer

A warrant officer is a rank in the army which is above the non-commissioned officers NCO’s) and below the commissioned officers (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). Warrant officers in the United States army have played a significant role towards securing the country and in promoting humanity. Their primary goal is to serve as technical experts who provide valuable guidance, skills, and expertise to organizations or commanders in specific fields. The group has in the past proved their significance through missions outside America in pursuit of fellow Americans under threat or to countries that rely on the help of America. Their contributions to gender equality are witnessed through the awarding of women who dedicate their lives to serving the nation. Some of the contributions made by the warrant officers include the highest price of death. Since 1993 to present, the contributions of the army’s warrant officers deserve honor as they celebrate their one hundred years of service.

In 1993, the importance of the army’s warrant officers was noticed in their street and air support during the Mogadishu battle in Somalia (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). The country had decided to invade Somalia in pursuit of Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Somalia was in a state of civil war with server famine. The situation in the country had deteriorated for the worst, with self-imposed leaders, such as Aidid declaring himself the president. His troops attacked the U.N forces in Somali in what is considered as one of the deadliest attacks in history. The United States had to take action and dispatched its army in a mission called Operation Gothic Serpent (Dotson, 2016). The army’s warrant officer proved significance as they moved to provide air and street support to the United States Army. Several warrant officers including CW4 Ray Frank lost their lives in the operation (Dotson, 2016). The unit had paid the highest prize of death while on a humanitarian mission. The act shows the selfless act of the army warrant officers as they seek to help the oppressed.

The army warrant officer rank has continued with its efforts to support women by motivating them and giving them an opportunity to hold positions in areas where their numbers were limited. Their efforts are witnessed in the awards issued to women who have performed exemplary. For example, in 2005, Chief Warrant Officer Five, Sharon Swartworth, was honored for her contribution as the first active Army CW5 (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). She was also honored for being the first female Regimental Warrant Officer of the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC). CW5 Sharon Swartworth died in 2003 after a Blackhawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq. Another woman who has received acknowledgment as a Warrant officer is CW1 Angela Lowe (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). She is the first female to graduate from Warrant Officer Candidate School as a Field Artillery Warrant Officer in 2001. Such efforts are an indication that the Army’s warrant officers are in support of women empowerment, which is a call for gender equality. Their contribution is a motivation to other organizations to take up the initiative and allow women to hold positions that were in the past dominated by men.

The contributions of the army’s warrant officers are also witnessed in the Iraq mission. The soldiers offered technical support to other organizations in Iraq including rescue missions. For example, in 2007, the top U.S. general in Iraq awarded four Apache pilots alongside other soldiers for rescuing two pilots whose aircraft had been shot down by the enemy (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). The act demonstrated that the army warrants also have a duty to making sure that every soldier in the battle is safe through rescue missions in times of need. The department has also demonstrated its contributions by accepting Amputees of the Iraq battle to join Warrant Officer Candidate School. The Staff Sergent, Jonathan Holsey is an example of a person who sustained injuries in Iraq and was accepted to join Warrant Officer Candidate School (Warrantofficerhistory.org, 2015). The act is a sign of inclusion without bias a practice that is advocated for by the values of United States in the fight against any form of discrimination.

Army warrant officers have also contributed to events to entertain Americans, which is a sign that they are involved in other activities apart from battles and life-saving missions. In 2009, the army band entertained Americans under the command of Chief Warrant Officer 3 Sheila Klotz (Dotson, 2016). The event was at Inaugural Balls. The then president of the united states, Barrack Obama, was present alongside his wife. The event was significant to the citizens of the United States. It demonstrated the expertise of the army’s chief warrant officers across various fields.

Overall, the army’s warrant officers play a significant role towards the development of the country’s values and beliefs. The unit serves the nation with dedication. They have in the past been involved in humanitarian missions, such as the Mogadishu battle. Although the purpose was turned into a bloody battlefield, the unit tried its best in advocating for the rights of oppressed. Army warrant officers are also respected for their contributions towards women empowerment as witnessed in the various awarding and promotion of women within the unit. They also offer technical support to fellow soldiers who require help after a mission failure. Therefore, the group has demonstrated its importance through their values and actions which is a quality worth imitating.

The other cause for conformity is when the group size is significant, and you cannot compete or when the response is given publicly such that you cannot contest. With such understanding, there is a clear view of why some things happen the way they do without a particular explanation.

As an individual, having understood conformity, I have a better understanding of some situations that I see happening, and I do not have a logical explanation. For example, in parliament, there are some motions that the citizen would not approve of if they were to make the judgment on their own. For instance, increasing salaries for members of parliament while the members already earn too much. Adding more money is straining the economy and increasing the tax burden on the public. Some members of parliament may share my sentiments, but then because the majority vote has a say, they conform to the decision. Most laws in democratic states are passed by a majority vote, therefore, the person that the majority elect is the person to represent them. The same case applies to motions in parliament; they employ the use of the majority vote.

I desire to grow to understand the dynamics of conformity and ensure that the kind of people I relate to are of positive influence. With such a group surrounding you, it is a guarantee that the decisions you conform to are right and acceptable. I need to choose friends carefully and ensure that I am conscious of the choices I comply. I also need to grow into the analogy that I could use conformity to my advantage to push for the positive change in society. The essential thing to remember is to place me in the right group.

Workplace Negotiations

Since I am negotiating for better working terms for myself, there are a few issues that are the most important to me. The first significant issue to me is the salary. The salary is the most critical part of the employer and employee agreement, and any person that gets a good pay also gets to do a better job as they are motivated to do a good job. The next important thing to me is the working hours. There is need to have less working hours since within that period all the necessary work is complete. There is no need of hanging around the business environment to push hours. It is better to complete the target within a specific time and leave. The other important thing for me is the number of days in a week that we work (Brett, 2000). The amount would go to four days a week since in a week only four days are busy. On the fifth and sixth days, almost all people are not in the working mood, and even the clients rarely seek services on the fifth working day of the week. The other important thing for me is the benefits I get from working for the company as an individual. The insurance and the fee reimbursement are a priority to show care for the employee welfare. The last important thing for me as an employee is the office treatment by the seniors. I need to have human treatment and appreciated for my effort. A toxic work environment does not allow an employee to be productive enough (Podolny & Baron, 1997).

My BATNA is to work four days a week, and in those four days, I wish to work for twelve hours each day. The other part of the BATNA is to have a salary increment. My reservation price is getting a fifteen percent salary increment and working for five days (Brett, 2007). In those five days, the working days for each day could be a maximum of seven hours. I do not intend to go too far in the negotiation to lead to loss of the entire probability of getting my demands. My target is to get a twenty-five percent pay increment and get the four working days and twelve working hours each day. The negotiation is not about to get easy, but I have to defend my points keenly to make my supervisor agree to my demands and get the drift of my requirements.

My sources of power are several. The first source is my BATNA. Critically argued, the BATNA makes a lot of sense, and the case still makes sense since all the work gets done even during the increased working hours and the reduced days of working (Brett, 2000). The other source of power is my current position that allows me to make demands and influence the decisions by my position’s authority. The other source of authority that I have is the psychological games. The mind games make my supervisor feel superior is enough to make him want to do things in my favor to confirm that he or she has the power to change decisions.

The most critical issue for my opponent is to have work done. For my opponent it is not about the times and the days but the work need to take place. Another critical issue for my opponent is the need to make profits from the job. Therefore, much as we want the work done, there is also need to have gains come back from the work we are doing (Podolny & Baron, 1997). The benefit of the company sustains the company and makes it possible to pay employees and get the company in the proper running status. The other important issue is for the company to have enough time in the working calendar to accomplish the assigned tasks. With that addressed, the company came up with the current working schedule that is the framework for getting work done. The other important thing for the company is to have motivated employees that deliver in their tasks and meet the company goals. The employee needs are therefore necessary, and the company seeks to address the employee issues to the best of their ability to make the employee comfortable.

The opponent’s BATNA is the current working system which involves the current salary that has been that way for the standard employee; the working hours are eight and the working days are six (Brett, 2007). The schedule works perfectly for the company as they are achieving the targets and getting work done. The other important issues for the opponent are the welfare of the employee and the profit the company makes. The protection of the employee is essential as a company cannot operate on weaklings that cannot deliver the needed energy. Otherwise, the company will fail in the goals. The profit the company makes is also another vital part of the reasons why the company exists.

My opponent’s sources of power include the current BATNA, the position of power and the psychological reasoning. The current BATNA has all the work getting done efficiently hence has been in use for a while. Since the supervisor is also senior, their decision gives them power over the employee and allows them to make any decision they wish to make. The other part that is a source of power for the opponent is the psychology that they would use to convince me that the current working terms are the best I will get anywhere and therefore I should be content (Podolny & Baron, 1997).

My opening move is to stake my terms and the reasons behind the conditions. The reasoning should be convincing enough to get the supervisor to accept that even with my proposed terms. My value in the company will be the same or even better (Brett, 2000).

The BATNA am giving means working fewer hours and getting more pay. It is my responsibility to get the supervisor to see my value even in the reduced hours and see the need to pay me more. The only way to gain power for me in this negotiation is to prove to the supervisor that even with me working for fewer hours my value will increase and I will actually be of more value to the company and also the company will make more profit. The other reasoning is that the total time put in the work in total s still the same as working fewer hours for more days. Working for five days at ten hours a day is not any different from the current work schedules. The hours put in are the same total (Brett, 2007).
